Irene studied graphic design and photography at the Art Institute Umberto Boccioni in Naples, and also photo reportage and journalism at the School for Social in Rome with Paolo Gherardi, Giuliano Battiston and Massimo Loche. She worked at ENAIP Lazio where she designed and wrote a documentary screenplay, tutored by the italian director Giovanni Piperno, she worked in communications and public relations for social together with Alberto Crespi (from L’Unita’) as well as at VIC communication with a theatrical lab at Rebibbia jail, the lab was led by Fabio Cavalli e Laura Andreini Salerno.
She came back to Naples in 2013, where she founded her own cultural organisation, Scotch|snap, while starting to teach flute in secondary schools. She continued her studies by attending classes in photojournalism at the cultural organisation UpNea led by Sergio Siano (from Il Mattino). She also studied with Mario Laporta and Salvatore Laporta, Roberta Basile and Carlo Hermann at the professional photographers association “KontroLab”. She studied with Antonio Biasiucci at the Art Academy in Naples, where she attended classes in photography as an art language. She exhibited her work in Rome in 2013 part of the Occhi Rossi festival, at Salone dell’Editoria Sociale, where she exhibited her first work on migrants, and also in Naples at Salumeria UpNea where she presented her work shot in the Neapolitan neighbourhood Sanitá, this same work was also shown at the Annalisa Durante library in 2016 and at Salita Penninata park in the Spring of 2017. From June till August 2017 her works were shown at Palazzo Zevallos Stigiliano (Gallerie d’Italia) as part of the project “La fotografia ripercorre i temi di Salvatore Fergola” and in December 2018 she showed her work on mental health, involuntary psychiatric treatment and living conditions in the area of Vele in Scampia at the ex Asilo Filangieri in Naples, part of the “Grande Vento” event.
Between 2022 and 2023 she exhibited her long term work E Lucevan le stelle (2021) at the foundation Made in Cloister in Naples as well as at Magazzini Fotografici by Yvonne De Rose, the work is centred around the mental health theme, Irene has also engaged in public speaking debates on the topic and she spoke about the subject at Teatro Sala Assoli in Naples during the “I sabato della fotografia” festival, led by Pino Miraglia. In march 2023 she exhibited some of works in Milan at Spazio Base fotografia , and in November of the same year she held her very first personal exhibition at 2Lab in Catania with her project E Lucevan le stelle. She won the XC edition of Portfolio Jonico, part of the Portfolio Italia 2022 with her work E lucevan le stelle, being amongst the top ten finalists of the national competition.
Her photographs were published on Napoli Monitor, Il Mattino, La Repubblica, Il Corriere del Mezzogiorno, Il Corriere della Sera and other online newspapers. She worked for Napoli Monitor and Il Crivello, and her photos are published on Emergency’s website as well. She attended photography workshops led by Letizia Battaglia, Robert Herman, Laura Pannack and Simona Ghizzoni and also with Pietro Masturzo and Silvia Camporesi. She furthermore studied at the national school Scuola dell’Arte della Medaglia dell’Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in Rome, at the Accademia Chigiana di Siena, at the Italian Academy of Flute and lastly at Roma3Orchestra, and also played in the orchestra for over 10 years both in Italy and abroad. In 2017 she started studying creative writing at the association Un’Altra Galassia in Naples with Massimiliano Virgilio, Valeria Parrella and Patrizia Rinaldi. In 2018 she obtained a certification as a social worker with “Maestri di Strada” NGO by Cesare Moreno, after which she activated a lab for young adults and children with mental disabilities. From 2019 she has been attending workshops on the topic of musical therapy at the Scuola Triennale di Musicoterapia “Carlo Gesualdo” near Avellino. Irene lives in Naples.
